Effects on Organisms

Effects on Zebrafish

The research group Aquatic Ecology and Toxicology (Prof. Thomas Braunbeck) at the University of Heidelberg attempts to clarify the effects of selected antidiabetics, artificial sweeteners and antidepressants on early developmental stages of the zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The major focus of the studies is to understand the mechanisms underlying the pathological alterations. Especially with reference to the neuroactive pharmaceuticals, we want to find out what consequences the neurological alterations might have on the behavior of the fish.

Effects on Brown Trout and Big Ramshorn Snail

At University of Tuebingen (Animal Physiological Ecology), the research group of Prof. Dr. Rita Triebskorn investigates effects of selected antidiabetics, artificial sweeteners and antidepressants on the health status and the embryonic development of endemic aquatic organisms like brown trout (Salmo trutta) and big ramshorn snail (Planorbarius corneus).

The integrity of liver and hepatopancreas tissue, changes in metabolic processes, changes in behavior and activity of neurotransmitters are analysed.
